Tanglewood, one of the world’s premier summer music festivals and the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937, has announced its upcoming season, “Celebrating Lenny!” Throughout the summer of 2018, Tanglewood will celebrate the centennial of conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth.

Bernstein’s close relationship with the Boston Symphony Orchestra spanned a half-century, from the time he became a protégé of legendary BSO conductor Serge Koussevitzky as a member of the first Tanglewood Music Center class in 1940, until the final concerts he ever conducted with the BSO and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra at Tanglewood in 1990.

On August 25, Bernstein’s birth-date, a gala concert, “The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood,” conducted by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons, Christoph Eschenbach, Keith Lockhart, Michael Tilson Thomas, and John Williams, will feature an astonishing array of guest artists: Audra McDonald, Midori, Yo-Yo Ma, Susan Graham, and Thomas Hampson, to name a few.

In addition, the BSO will be joined for this very special occasion by members of numerous other orchestras with which Bernstein maintained close associations.

The Tanglewood Season runs from June 15 through September 2 and includes a Young People’s Concert, exhibits from the Brandeis University Collection and the Whitestone and Walter Scott Photo Collections, a Festival of Contemporary Music, a performance by James Taylor and his all-star Band, and a Special Colloquium focusing on Bernstein’s role as a social conscience of his time, moderated by Michael Tilson Thomas — among many other events.

Tanglewood is located in the beautiful Berkshire Hills, between Stockbridge and Lenox, Massachusetts. Launching a new chapter in the illustrious festival’s 80-year history, Tanglewood has begun construction of a new multi-use, multi-season, four-building complex designed to support the performance and rehearsal activities of the Tanglewood Music Center and be the focal point of a new initiative, the Tanglewood Learning Institute, offering wide-ranging education and enrichment programs designed to enhance the patron experience. The new buildings are scheduled to open in summer 2019.
