The Scene In and Around Boston . . . More than 400 guests enjoyed The Steppingstone Foundation's recent annual "Crystal Ball" at The Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. The black-tie Gatsby-themed soiree raised $80,000 for the non-profit's programs, which prepare urban schoolchildren for educational opportunities that lead to college. Live music was provided by the Flipside. A silent auction offered many items, including a signed Boston Bruins jersey and a year's supply of Samuel Adams beer. Steppingstone was founded in 1990 and has programs in Boston, Hartford and Philadelphia. For additional information, visit www.tsf.org.

BSO Food Drive Scheduled The Boston Symphony Orchestra will hold a food drive at Symphony Hall in conjunction with Boston Symphony Orchestra performances of Mendelssohn's stirring dramatic oratorio "Elijah" on Thursday, April 1; Friday, April 2; and Saturday, April 3, to benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank. The BSO's food drive is taking place in connection with "Orchestras Feeding America," a nationwide project of the League of American Orchestras, which represents the nation's professional, volunteer, and youth orchestras. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is also teaming up with The Greater Boston Food Bank to offer a Virtual Aid Food Drive at www.bso.org/fooddrive. Receptacles for the BSO's food drive at Symphony Hall will be available at both the Massachusetts Avenue and Cohen Wing entrances, before concerts and during concert intermissions. Though patrons with tickets to these concerts are especially encouraged to support the food drive, members of the community are also invited to participate in the food drive by dropping off food items between 7 and 8 p.m. each night. The BSO food drive can only accept canned food items and pasta. For safety reasons, the Greater Boston Food Bank does not accept baby food, baby formula, and glass containers. The "Orchestras Feeding America" program was launched in 2009 with 250 orchestras participating nationwide collecting more than 200,000 pounds of food. The Greater Boston Food Bank distributes approximately 30 million pounds of food and grocery products annually to more than 600 hunger-relief agencies in a dedicated partnership to end hunger in eastern Massachusetts. The Food Bank serves 83,000 people each week and is a member of Feeding America. For more information about The Greater Boston Food Bank, visit www.gbfb.org or call 617-427-5200. The BSO's 2009-10 season continues through May 1. Program and ticket details are available at www.bso.org. Enjoy! |
