The annual dinner gala for the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) was held recently at the Four Seasons Hotel for 180 guests. The evening, co-chaired by Carolyn Lynch and Susan Sloan, raised more than $100,000 for NEHGS' new Business Technology Initiative.

Annette Gordon-Reed, 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner for history for her book, "The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family" was the keynote speaker. Gordon-Reed is a historian and professor of law at New York Law School.

Joining Professor Gordon-Reed at the dinner was special guest, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University.

Dr. Gates' latest television project, "Faces of America" airs on PBS. The show, a follow-up to the popular series, "African American Lives," features twelve celebrities and includes their individual family genealogies and histories.

A private reception preceded the dinner at the home of Carolyn Lynch, NEHGS Trustee, and her husband Peter.

Founded in 1845, New England Historic Genealogical Society is the country's leading resource for family history research. The Society helps family historians expand their knowledge, skill, and understanding of their family and its place in history.

The NEHGS research center, located at 99 Newbury Street, Boston, houses millions of books, journals, manuscripts, photographs, microfilms, documents, records, and other artifacts that date back more than four centuries. NEHGS staff includes some of the leading expert genealogists in the country, specializing in early American, Irish, English, Italian, Scottish, Atlantic and French Canadian, African American, Native American, and Jewish genealogy.
