(Photo by Roger Farrington)On Friday, June 12, the Museum of Fine Arts' Fashion Council, a group dedicated to the fashion arts, hosted an exclusive event at the home of Malcolm Rogers, Director of the MFA. The event featured a Chanel fashion show, organized by Mary Nobile-King, Director of the Chanel Boutique in Boston. Boston's fashion elite were in attendance, including Jane Burke, Chair of the Advisory Committee for the MFA's Fashion Council and one of The Boston Globe's "25 Most Stylish Bostonians of 2008"; Pamela Parmal, the Curator of Textile and Fashion Arts and Department Head of the MFA's Textile and Fashion Arts Department; and Erica Corsano, editorial director of "Stuff" magazine, just to name a few. As the guests enjoyed their lunch, models wearing fashions from the Chanel Paris-Moscou 2008/2009 Collection strolled by to give them a closer look at the craftsmanship of the ensembles. Funds raised by the MFA Fashion Council support the Textile and Fashion Arts department and are used for the acquisition of 20th and 21st-century fashion.
"Roxbury Film Festival" scheduled for July 30-August 2 The "Roxbury Film Festival 2009" takes place from Thursday, July 30 through Sunday, August 2 at various locations throughout Boston. The largest festival dedicated to celebrating people of color, past celebrity guests have included Ruby Dee, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Robert Townsend, Michael Ealy, and many more others who have showcased films and hosted events at the Roxbury Film Festival. Daylily Festival Takes Place August 1 in Dudley The "Patriot Daylily Festival" takes place on Saturday, August 1 at Partridge Hill Gardens in Dudley, Mass. The event is co-sponsored by the non-profit Patriot Daylily Society, Inc. and Partridge Hill Gardens. The festive-and-fun and "very social" event takes place rain or shine from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Talks and demonstrations about daylilies will be held throughout the day with experts and volunteers on hand to answer all daylily questions. There will be numerous raffles for some of the newest daylily introductions as well as other garden related items. Free "Jazz at the Fort" Concert on August 2 Berklee College of Music and ParkARTS will present an outdoor concert in Roxbury's historic Fort Hill neighborhood featuring the Terri Lyne Carrington Group and the Berklee City Music All-Stars. The annual "Jazz at the Fort" concert is free and will be held on Sunday, August 2, at 5 p.m., at the four-acre Highland Park on Fort Avenue, Roxbury. The rain date is August 9. Folding chairs, blankets, and picnics are encouraged. Carrington was born in Medford. She has had an extensive touring career of more than 20 years with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Cassandra Wilson, Clark Terry, Dianne Reeves, and others. Millions saw her on TV as the house drummer on the Arsenio Hall Show, and on Quincy Jones' VIBE. She was nominated for a Grammy award for her debut album, 1989's "Real Life Story." She recently returned to her hometown where she was appointed professor at Berklee College of Music, her alma mater, and artistic director of the BeanTown Jazz Festival. Opening will be the Berklee City Music All-Stars, an ensemble comprised of scholarship students from Boston's urban neighborhoods. The group will perform a mix of standards, contemporary jazz, and Latin music. In April, the All-Stars performed in New York City at an event hosted by Quincy Jones to promote national music education for youth.
