The Scene In and Around Boston . . . Tom Sliney, General Manager of Dick's Last Resort in Boston's Quincy Market, recently presented a donation check to CarePacks President Stephen Doyle representing the final amount of more than $7500.00 that was raised by the staff at Dick's through "Boston Salutes!," an annual fundraising evening that featured a complimentary buffet, beverages, entertainment by the Gregg Miller Group, a charity raffle and the live auction of an American flag that had flown over both Iraq and Afghanistan. The event was presented by Dick's with the assistance of American Airlines, the Boston Herald, Samuel Adams beer and WRKO. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the nonprofit CarePacks provides soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with essential supplies to help improve their morale, mental health, quality of life, and remind them they are remembered back home. Congratulations!
"A Company Christmas at Pops" Scheduled by Boston Symphony Orchestra On Wednesday, December 16, at 8 p.m., Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart will lead the 26th annual "A Company Christmas at Pops," one of the BSO's most important annual fundraising events. Grammy award-winner Debby Boone will headline a list of special guests that includes film and Broadway actor Frank Langella, who will narrate "A Visit from St. Nicholas," and the latest incarnation of the famous a cappella group, The Swingle Singers. This year's holiday fundraiser already has raised more than $900,000 to benefit the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops orchestras, and represents support from nearly 100 New England companies. "A Company Christmas at Pops" is part of the Holiday Pops season, which is continuing through December 27, at Symphony Hall. William F. Achtmeyer and Richard F. Connolly, Jr. are the event chairs for this year's "A Company Christmas at Pops." Building on a beloved 26-year tradition, 200 youngsters from children's service organizations throughout greater Boston will be invited as special guests to this year's event. The children's program begins at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. Children will enjoy dinner, visits from Santa and costumed characters, and goodie bags provided by a variety of in-kind donors. Silver Fox Motorcoaches will provide buses to transport the children from the Fairmont Copley Plaza to Symphony Hall. A limited number of tickets are available for public sale online at www.bostonpops.org. Single ticket admission is at 7:30 p.m. and includes only the concert. While available, tickets may also be purchased by phone at SymphonyCharge at 617-266-1200 or 888-266-1200. All Holiday Pops patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket.
