Earlier this social season, the Boston Harbor Hotel hosted a gala benefit dinner for Boston Health Care for the Homeless raising more than $1 million for the non-profit's "A Home of Our Own" campaign, as the organization prepared to move into its new $42 million facility, Jean Yawkey Place, located on Albany Street in Boston.

The 22 year-old non-profit currently serves more than 10,000 homeless men, women and children with the help of more than 250 staff and 100 volunteers.

Lauren Bacall and Susan Sarandon to Receive Awards at Boston University

The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center and The Bette Davis Foundation will host a "Bette Davis Centenary Tribute" on Thursday, September 18, at Boston University.

The Center will open a new major exhibition, "A Retrospective of the Life and Work of Bette Davis" at a champagne reception. After the reception, the Foundation will present the Bette Davis Medal of Honor to screen legend Lauren Bacall and the Bette Davis Lifetime Achievement Award to Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon.

Film critic Rex Reed will make tribute remarks about all three actresses following a presentation of film clips. A cocktail reception will follow the award ceremony.

Dick's Last Resort Will Host Benefit for Foundation

On Thursday, September 18, Dick's Last Resort, located in Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston, presents its third annual "Boston Salutes!," a special evening benefiting The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation.

Sponsors for the event include AM 680 WRKO, the Boston Herald and Samuel Adams, with support from American Airlines and the InterContinental Boston.

WRKO's morning drive-time talk host Tom Finneran will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event. WRKO will also host an advance on-air auction benefiting the charity.

Guests will enjoy a buffet and beverages along with entertainment by vocalist Helena Ruffen. Active duty military in uniform and Gold Star Mothers will be admitted at no charge.

All donations as well as all funds generated from a raffle held during the event will benefit the work of the foundation. The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation is dedicated to providing scholarships and financial educational support to the children of active duty Marines and Federal law enforcement personnel killed in the line of duty. As the organization is all-volunteer, 100% of all donations are channeled directly into the foundation's programs.

Boston Symphony Orchestra Gala Concert Opens Season on September 24

Under the baton of BSO Music Director James Levine, the Boston Symphony Orchestra opens its 2008-09 season with an all-Russian gala concert at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, at Symphony Hall.

Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska, a rising star in the international classical music scene, makes her BSO debut.

The Opening Night gala event will be followed by an elegant post-concert dinner for symphony leaders, donors, and musicians at Boston's Fairmont Copley Plaza, incorporating the evening's Russian theme into a special menu, which includes Smoked Salmon with braised cabbage and pickled mushrooms, Filet Mignon "Stroganoff" and Strawberries Romanoff.

The event, which opens with a 5:30 p.m. cocktail reception at Symphony Hall, will raise more than $500,000 for the BSO, the world's largest orchestral institution as measured by scope of operations.

Dr. Paul Buttenwieser and Katie Buttenwieser are the chairs of Opening Night, with Governor and Mrs. Deval and Diane Patrick as the honorary co-chairmen.
