Founded in 1977 and located in the Charlestown Navy Yard, the MGH Institute of Health Professions is an innovative and independent graduate school operating within the framework of Partners HealthCare. On June 12, more than 300 Institute supporters and friends gathered at the InterContinental Hotel in Boston to celebrate the "Second Annual Scholarship Gala." Hosted by advertising executive Jack Connors, and co-chaired by his son John Connors III and Diana Scott, the evening capped a yearlong $685,000 fundraising effort. Get Konnected! On Tuesday, July 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., we are all invited to "Get Konnected!" at the chic restaurant 28 Degrees, located at One Appleton Street, in Boston's South End. A first of its kind, "Get Konnected!" was created by Colette Phillips Communications to "help make Boston a more welcoming and inclusive city for professionals and business leaders of all cultures." Get Konnected! is a monthly event that provides a not-to-be-missed opportunity for networking. This evening's featured special guests are the Divas Uncorked, a group of ten vivacious African-American women, whose mission is "to make wine more approachable...." The Divas will lead an informative wine tasting-teaching guests about the nuances of bouquet, the tradition of vintage wines, and the fusion of wine and food pairings. Elvis Presley Tribute Scheduled for Dick's Last Resort On Saturday, August 16, Dick's Last Resort hosts "Hunk-A-Hunk-A Elvis Night," marking the 31st anniversary of The King's death. Elvis impersonator Dana Z and his band will present a musical tribute. According to the folks at Dick's, "Elvis may have kicked off his Blue Suede Shoes for the last time some 31 years ago, [but that won't stop us] from celebrating the life and times of The King." To mark the anniversary of the day Mr. "Jail House Rock" passed on to that big recording studio in the sky (August 16, 1977), everybody at Dick's will be decked out in their best "Viva Las Vegas" duds. The merriment begins at 10 p.m. For information and reservations, give Dick's a holler at 617-267-8080. Dick's Last Resort is located at Quincy Market in the Faneuil Hall Marketplace. There's no cover charge at Dick's, plus there's discounted parking at the garage at 75 State Street. Just bring your parking ticket to the front desk to be validated by one of Dick's staffers. Incidentally, classy and elegant it's not. But hubby and I recently visited Dick's with friends and had lots of fun and delicious food. We enjoyed the best spicy batter-fried green beans - so good, I'll have to get the recipe. Of course, we won't mention calories, will we?
Enjoy Cirque du Soleil at Bayside Expo The latest Cirque du Soleil touring show, "Kooza," premieres in Boston on September 5. "Kooza" will perform for a limited engagement under the trademark blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) at a new location, the Bayside Expo Center. "Kooza" is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions - acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor. The name "Kooza" is inspired by the Sanskrit word "koza," which means "box," "chest" or "treasure," and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a "circus in a box." Several of the 53 performing artists in the show have received awards from important circus arts competitions, notably in juggling and trapeze.
