For the past 12 years, Bostonians have gathered to celebrate and preserve Boston’s historic green spaces at the annual “Green and White Ball” sponsored by The Friends of the Public Garden. This year’s gala was held earlier this social season in the Grand Ballroom of Taj Boston. This year marked the 170th Anniversary of the Public Garden and the 80th Anniversary of Taj Boston’s landmark building—“two Boston traditions side by side.”
Formed in 1970, The Friends of the Public Garden is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the Public Garden, the Boston Common and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.
Thanks to the generous contributions and sponsorship gifts from individuals and corporations, all proceeds from this year’s event benefited the endowment of the Friends as part of a larger campaign to provide for its future administration and critical areas of care in these three historic green spaces.
“Our guests look out the windows and find enjoyment and well-being in the lush greenery, stately trees and colorful flower beds that provide an ever-changing work of art, and we want to help continue this for future generations,” said David Gibbons, General Manager of Taj Boston.
The black-tie gala began with a cocktail reception followed by an elegant three-course dinner and dancing to Soul Sound Review. As they approached the entrance to The Taj, guests were greeted by Boston Park Rangers on horseback.
The décor and table centerpieces, which “created a garden atmosphere in the ballroom,” were designed by Winston Flowers.
“Throughout the years, this event has raised over $1 million dollars in proceeds, all of which benefit the work of the Friends,” said Henry Lee, President of the Friends of The Public Garden. Congratulations and Best Wishes to all!

Marjorie Clapprood on Road to Recovery
We were very happy to hear from Chris Spinazzola that his lovely wife Marjorie Clapprood is doing well after her recent bone marrow transplant. “Believe it or not she is approaching her 100th day post transplant... Sept 29th... just 5 days after her birthday. After that the restrictions will begin to be lessened on everything from what she can eat, to whom she can see.... but not for more public interaction.”
Over Labor Day, Marjorie was able to enjoy a visit from their son Eric, daughter-in-law Maile and grandkids Jordan and Ashlyn, who came up from Connecticut, for the first time since the procedure.
According to Chris, “She was up making homemade waffles, bacon, eggs and blueberry pancakes … at dawn. She is always the most amazing hostess, especially when it comes to her nieces, nephews and grandkids. And she managed to do it again... though it tires her more easily now than she ever expects.”
Chris and Marjorie and the entire family thank their family, friends and colleagues for “all of your prayers, warm wishes, and good thoughts.”
Our sincere Best Wishes to Chris and Marjorie and their family.
Enjoy!
