On November 17, The Arc of Greater Boston presented the first ever “Rose Pessin Memorial Award” to George K. Regan Jr. of Regan Communications at the nonprofit's annual “Red & White Ball” at the Seaport Hotel. The premise of the Red & White Ball Rose Pessin Memorial Award is one in which a dedicated citizen is honored for his/her exceptional effort and contributions within the community.

The award is named in memory of the organization's matriarch Rose Pessin, who passed away last year, after dedicating 37 memorable years as The Arc's Director of Development. The Arc of Greater Boston is the Boston area's local chapter of the oldest and largest national advocacy organization advocating on behalf of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the world.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Congressman William Delahunt and Congressman Stephen Lynch were among the sold-out crowd of notable Bostonians joining The Arc in celebrating the life of Rose Pessin and honoring George Regan. Also in attendance were many Arc supporters including Red Sox Senior Vice President Larry Cancro and Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau President Pat Moscaritolo.

WHDH 7 News Anchor Randy Price presided as master of ceremonies. WBZ-TV Sports Anchor Bob Lobel hosted a live auction. The black-tie optional affair included cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and live entertainment from Ernie Boch Jr.'s band, “Ernie and the Automatics.”

"George Regan has been a longtime supporter of The Arc and has personally worked with Rose Pessin," said Arc CEO Terri Angelone. "Rose had asked George to be Man of the Year last year, shortly after the 2006 Ball, and he agreed whole-heartedly, without hesitation. After Rose's passing, Pat Moscaritolo suggested to The Arc's Board of Directors that the annual award should be renamed the “Rose Pessin Memorial Award” in her memory. I cannot think of a more fitting title for this distinguished award."

"It was a privilege to be considered a friend by Rose and I am honored to receive the first ever ‘Rose Pessin Memorial Award’ from the Arc of Greater Boston," said George K. Regan Jr. "It is humbling and gratifying to be recognized for my modest contributions, in the company of so many tremendous individuals and organizations who work every day on behalf of this great cause."

The Arc of Greater Boston is a non-profit organization serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Started in 1945 by a small group of parents who wanted to provide support services to their children with special needs, The Arc of Greater Boston was the first organization of its kind in Boston. MSPCA-Angell Holiday Trees at Prudential Center

On Thursday, December 6 the MSPCA-Angell, along with pet lovers, will kick off the holiday season at 5:30 p.m. with the official lighting of the MSPCA-Angell holiday trees in the Prudential Center, at the Huntington Arcade entrance.

The trees will be adorned with ornaments and tree toppers featuring photos of local residents' pets. 7News Anchor Randy Price will emcee the event and MSPCA-Angell Chief Executive Officer Carter Luke will speak and light the trees with the help of a surprise guest.

Best selling author Suzy Becker will also be on hand to meet guests and sign copies of her latest release, "All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat - Double Platinum Edition," with proceeds benefiting the MSPCA-Angell's Phinney's Friends Program.

The celebration will also include holiday refreshments donated by the Prudential's Top of the Hub Restaurant and music from the Boston City Singers, Boston's acclaimed youth and children's chorus.

This year, pet supply retailer, Especially for Pets, will be handing out Doggie and Kitty treats for event-goers to bring home to their pets. (Alas, the Prudential Center rules prohibit all animals except service dogs from attending.)

Proceeds from the sale of Holiday Tree ornaments will benefit the MSPCA-Angell's Pet Care Assistance Fund (PCAF). The PCAF is a special resource that assists qualifying pet owners who need help paying for the treatment of their sick or injured pets. It also provides veterinary care for victims of cruelty, abuse and neglect.

Last year the MSPCA-Angell helped 966 low-income families and their much-loved pets by donating more than $350,000 worth of free veterinary care.
