The New England Historic Genealogical Society recently held a fundraising gala at the Algonquin Club in Boston. We are told that the elegant soiree is destined to become an annual event. The keynote speaker was Brandeis professor David Hackett Fischer, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2005 for his book, “Washington’s Crossing.”

More than 150 guests attended in support of NEHGS’s continued efforts to strengthen and grow its national collections and genealogical databases, which date back more than four hundred years. NEHGS is the country's oldest and largest genealogical society and has seen a recent increase in membership, both regionally and nationally, as more and more people explore their family histories.

Guiding Light, Cameras, Action!

We hear that soap opera super hotties, Murray Bartlett and Michelle Ray Smith from CBS' long-running smash “The Guiding Light” took the Taj Boston by storm on May 30 as they shot an uber glam spread for the CBS network magazine “WATCH!”

Taj Boston's General Manager, David Gibbons, welcomed the TV stars and their maggie crew and gave them total access to the luxurious digs. Stylized sets, inspired loosely by scenes from “The Thomas Crown Affair,” were staged all over the Taj Boston.

Striking glamorous poses for their fictional heist, Bartlett was draped in couture and Ray Smith dripped in diamonds from Dorfman Jewelers. This particular issue of “WATCH!” is due out in September. In the meantime, we all can catch Michelle and Murray on “Guiding Light” weekdays at 9 a.m. on WBZ-TV.

Free Lecture on Old and Rare Books Scheduled in Hull

On Thursday, June 14, Kenneth Gloss, proprietor of the nationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston's Downtown Crossing will give a free and open talk for the Friends of the Hull Public Library entitled, "Treasures in Your Attic: Old and Rare Books."

Due to construction the presentation will be held at The Hull Senior Center, 197 Samoset Avenue, Hull. Refreshments will be served before the talk. Parking is available across the street in the public lot next to St. Ann's Church.

"New England homes are treasure-troves for old and rare books that have increased in value over the years," says Gloss. "We invite the public to bring any volumes they want to know about to the lecture for a free verbal appraisal."

The Brattle Book Shop is one of America's oldest and largest antiquarian bookstores. Gloss will bring to the lecture several examples of interesting books, magazines and ephemera from the store's private collection, such as a 1912 World Series scorecard and examples of old LIFE Magazines. (He owns the complete set!) He also has a sales brochure for the Titanic.

Following the lecture and question-and-answer session, he will give free verbal appraisals of those books that people bring with them or will do so at anytime at his 9 West Street emporium in Boston. For further information, please call the Brattle Book Shop at 1-800-447-9595 or visit their Web site, www.brattlebookshop.com

Summer Party for Young Professionals at MFA

On Saturday, June 16, the Museum Council of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA)––a vibrant group of young professionals—hosts its fourth annual “Summer Party,” a dazzling evening at the MFA featuring luscious cocktails, hearty hors d’oeuvres, dessert, music by popular D.J. Deja, dancing, and a silent auction including works by many local artists.

According to the MFA’s charming Amelia Carignan, “This is an opportunity to enjoy an elegant evening at a world-renowned art museum, while mingling with Boston’s hottest crowd at the black tie event of the season!” All the fun event begins at 8 p.m.

DKNY is the premiere fashion sponsor for this benefit, with all proceeds supporting the Museum Council’s gift to the current major campaign: “Building the New MFA.” For tickets or more information, please call 617-369-3268 or e-mail MuseumCouncil@mfa.org

“Present Laughter” Continues at The Huntington Theatre

Continuing through Sunday, June 17 at The Huntington Theatre is “Present Laughter.” Victor Garber (from TV's "Alias") stars as aging matinee idol Garry Essendine in one of Noël Coward’s funniest and most delightful comedies.

Devastatingly handsome and thoroughly charming, Garry lives his life like it's one grand performance. But on the eve of a major tour, things fall apart in hysterical fashion as he juggles old flames, a crazed playwright, and (gasp!) middle age. Nicholas Martin, the Huntington's own master of laughter, directs.

For tickets or more information, please call 617-266-0800.
