“The Consuls Ball - A World-Class Evening” was recently held at The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. Presented by the United Nations Association of Greater Boston (UNAGB), the gala benefited global education programs in local schools. The hotel’s elegant ballroom was adorned with flags from all the countries represented by the Consuls in attendance, and each dining table celebrated a national theme.
New England Cable News’ charming R.D. Sahl was the master of ceremonies for the festive evening, which included a reception and silent auction, dinner and dancing, and award presentations. Guests wore black tie, gorgeous ball gowns, or national dress.
Our friend Conrado Bondoc, who happens to have a Papal knighthood, wore his Papal decorations for the first time in Boston—most appropriate since the Ball was a diplomatic event. Conrado’s guest for the evening was the lovely Sophia Wharton, anchor/reporter for the CBS affiliate in Kansas City, who traveled to Boston specifically for the Ball. Incidentally, we are most appreciative that Conrado shared the details of the very special evening with us.
When asked, he noted that he admired and enjoyed seeing all the different modes of dress, but that one of his favorites was that of Thailand’s Honorary Consul-General, Joseph A. Milano, owner of Boston’s famous Union Oyster House, and one of the evening’s “Ambassador Table” hosts.
According to the UNAGB Web site, other hosts included Agnes Capiau Van Langenhove, Nader Darehshori, Camie and Guppy Ford, Janice and Roger Hunt, Leonard Kopelman, Ted and Beedee Ladd, James F. Morgan and Jane E. O’Brien.
The evening’s special “Leadership Award” recipients were Dr. Barry Bloom, Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health; and Mikko Nissinen, Artistic Director of Boston Ballet.
Dr. Bloom has been extensively involved with the World Health Organization (WHO) for more than 30 years. He was honored “for his outstanding efforts in fighting infectious diseases worldwide and promoting and implementing international public health initiatives.”
Mikko Nissinen is recognized internationally as an accomplished dancer, teacher and artistic director. He assumed the position of Artistic Director of Boston Ballet in September 2001. Born in Helsinki, Finland, the organization was “proud to honor him as one of Boston’s exceptional international citizens.”
The members of the Consular Corps in Boston are the local and regional representatives of more than forty-five countries. According to UNAGB, “In honoring the Consular Corps, we celebrate Boston's highly international community and recognize the rich diversity of the many cultures of the United Nations as well as its commitment to achieving international peace and security mainly through diplomacy.”

Shreve’s Renovated Flagship Store Hosts Benefit Party
Shreve, Crump & Low recently celebrated “The Return of Elegance” at the grand opening of their newly renovated flagship store in Boston. An invitation-only gala cocktail party began the new chapter in this company’s rich history.
More than 300 guests attended including Channel 7's Frances Rivera, Randy Price and Janet Wu; Boston fashion designer Denise Hajjar; New England Development's Steve Karp and Stephen Fischmann; and Boston photographer Cheryl Richards, just to name a very few. More than $10,000 was raised for Children's Hospital.
“Our goal is to restore the luster to this unique and treasured Boston gem,” said Shreve’s new owner David Walker. Mahogany and marble paneling, brand new softly lit display cases and giftware kiosks are just a few of the additions to the $10 million dollar renovation. A private vault will house the most exclusive pieces.
Guests at the event were treated to music provided by a Boston Symphony Orchestra trio as they feasted on gourmet hors d’oeuvres. St. John boutique was the official clothing partner, providing classic styling for models adorned with Shreve Crump & Low’s dazzling gems.
Shreve’s also celebrated its history by bringing some treasures from the past to the public. The trophy presented to Cy Young in 1908, designed by Shreve Crump & Low, was on loan from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Other items from the company’s collections will adorn the store on a more permanent basis. Artifacts, photographs, vintage designs, and other memorabilia spanning two centuries will complete the “Shreve Hall of Fame.”
“We are excited to be back and look forward to creating memories for generations to come,” said Mr. Walker.
Shreve Crump & Low, the oldest jeweler in the United States, opened its first store in 1796. Congratulations and Best Wishes all around! For more information about the company, log on to
