Tuesday Night Chats at Sea Fever Gear - Author Kathleen Brunelle
Tuesday, August 03, 2010 Sea Fever Gear continues its weekly Tuesday Night Chat series. Every Tuesday evening, the store hosts a discussion, guest speaker or workshop. The events are free, open to all, and are held in Sea Fever Gear's workshop adjacent to its retail store. Guests are encouraged to bring their own beach chairs. On Tuesday, August 3 from 6-7 PM, Cape Cod author Kathleen Brunelle will discuss her new book, Bellamy's Bride: The Search for Maria Hallett of Cape Cod. The story takes readers back to 1715, when a fifteen-year-old Cape Cod girl named Maria Hallett was seduced by a twenty-six-year-old Englishman named Samuel Bellamy. Bellamy soon left her to become one of the most infamous pirates of his day, Black Sam Bellamy. Maria remained on the Cape but was forced to live in solitude after giving birth to Bellamy's child. Two years later, Bellamy returned to his love, and Maria watched from the dunes as his flagship, the Whydah, sank in the worst nor'easter in the history of the Cape. The legend of Maria Hallett has been passed down for over two hundred years. Brunelle's book includes a compilation of the legends surrounding Maria and a search through records to find out if she actually existed. Brunelle will also sell and sign copies of the book at the event. Sea Fever Gear is located in the Shop Ahoy Plaza on Route 28 in West Chatham.
