Women in Traditional Music: Pioneers in Song - Concert

Saturday, September 14, 2019

Women musicians were deeply vested in American Traditional music, holding an important place in American history due to their technical skill on their instruments, their original songs, which still endure, and their fight as women to take their rightful place in American music.

Songs covered will range from old-time music played on banjo, guitar, mandolin and ukulele, to Piedmont and Delta Blues, as well as gospel and ragtime. Blues and gospel women such as Memphis Minnie, Ma Rainey and Sister Rosetta Tharpe will be presented as well as that of traditional musicians like Maybelle and Sarah Carter, Ola Belle Reed, Cousin Emmy, Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard.

Slide guitar and blues mandolin workshops will be offered before the concert!

St. John's Coffeehouse Concerts benefit charitable organizations such as the Arlington Food Pantry and the Housing Corporation of Arlington. Please bring good-date nonperishables to donate to the food pantry.
