The New Annotated African American Folktales - Mass Historical Society - Lecture

Monday, November 27, 2017

Henry Louis Gates and Maria Tartar's new volume presents nearly 150 African American stories, among them familiar Brer Rabbit classics, but also stories like The Talking Skull and Witches Who Ride, as well as out-of-print tales from the 1890s' Southern Workman.

They will each recount one or two folktales and explain why the stories are important to understanding the African American experience.

This will be followed by a conversation on how the stories were collected and selected to be included in the volume and how this publication fits within the context of previous presentations (and misrepresentations) of African American lore as a part of the American literary cannon.
